The Adirondack Series has been inspired by my observations within the Adirondack Park’s six million acres during the last 40 years.
The pieces show that nestled at the mucky edges of the tourist-y places, looking out from the secret spaces, there is a rhythm of peaceful, soothing, serenity. Right before the darkness settles in, there is a moment of light.
At the shallow end (in any of the many lakes and ponds in Northern New York), hidden among the cattails and the waterlilies, wild life’s symbiotic movements settle the days’ hectic pace.

This series of abstract expressionist paintings achieves maximum visual intensity through a concentration on the effects of color and contrast.
Inspired by architectural forms, the energic, boldly-simplified geometric shapes were created by using a palette knife to cut, slice and spread the freely-applied paint. This creates movement and breaks the tension between the thick layers of color.

Paying attention to the individuality of each tree in the forest, the bare trunks allow the viewer to see the space around them.
Quick brushstrokes mimic dappled light through the trees’ leaves on a flat forest floor.
Below the forests’ variegated color, a borderline carries the weight of dark shadows.

Riding my motorcycle through the upstate New York countryside inspired these dreamy pastoral scenes.
This series features almost impossibly intimate positions among delicate flowers as well as distant panoramic views.
Purposeful proportions divide oceans of grasses as they melt into the mid-ground and invite the eye toward the established horizon lines. Here, a stream or lake is seen as a welcome companion who can also put on a spectacular show.

Striving to capture the mood of early mornings spent on the Caribbean islands, these diptychs were among the first completed after my transition to painting from a career working in glass.
As with a book, these paintings open up to tell a story. This is the story of becoming. The separate panels invite contrast and remind the viewer that transformation is a segmented process.
In this new, wide-open world, I was just beginning to find the individual style that would become definitive of my later work.
